So with the recent news of definitely moving to South Carolina, I've taken on project Let It Go! (Movie reference from Frozen)-yes, how mom-like of me.
In the past month since our plans have become more and more real, I began cleaning out our house. Two things have occurred to me while doing this. 1) I've been severely laxed in assessing our belongings and 2) I'm slightly concerned that my mom's tensity to be a hoarder is hereditary!!
Luckily, I'm all about self-help and improvement! I began to read up on articles of cleaning and decluttering. Not to mention after checking out a few real estate pages for the Columbia area, there's a 99% chance we'll be downsizing our living space by almost half! Ugh! I can do this!
I honestly don't even remember where I started. Probably the basement. I do know that I've donated approximately 16 full size garbage bags full of stuff to Salvation Army and Community Aid so far. I even manage to recoup a few bucks for Rachel's stuff at a local consignment shop. I would really like to have a yard sale for a bunch of this stuff, but I argue with myself on a daily basis that Ain't Nobody Got Time for Dat! Besides, if I hold onto it for a yard sale, how am I going to find all the other stuff that needs to be tossed? So, I continue to fill bag after bag.
The biggest challenge for me so far is figuring out how we'll be downsizing without storage space. The majority of homes in South Carolina do not have basements and ours is filled with "stuff." If I can reduce it to just holiday decorations that can go into a shed or attic, I may just make this move less stressful.
One of my frustrations has been constantly asking Sam to look through all the computer stuff he has collected (and moved twice already) to see if he really needs them. I mean c'mon....... I've already donated a ton of kitchen gadgets and cut my shoe collection by half! Make a sacrifice! Besides, when would he ever find time to build or repair computers?
Every time I consider keeping something, I try to picture myself packing it and moving it out, then back into the new place and unpacking it. And would it really be worth the energy? So in a way I've turned my laziness into a purging tool. Lol!
In addition to lots of outgrown clothes, random knick-knacks and odd ball dishes, I finally got rid of ALL the VHS tapes that were filling up two perfectly usable storage bins! Next is a box full of books that haven't seen daylight for over 8 years. Again, kept so Sam could reread them in his down time. Ummmm....riiiiight!
Honestly, some of the things we've held onto leaves me feeling ashamed of what we've spent money on just because 'We had to have it!!' At the same time it makes me realized that our riches have basically cluttered our lives. Truth is, we do not need the majority of the things we have.
So with all the Christmas decorations put away and packed for moving, I will be using up the next few months to continue my mission while painting and re-staging the house for sale. I'd say I have my work cut out for me!
